Land Where Life Used To Be

Ever heard of Secondary Ecological Succession? Neither have we.
In a nutshell, if there was a fire, hurricane, or over harvesting, Secondary Succession is the process of life returning to land where life used to be.
Let’s imagine a plot of farm land that has been completely depleted of all nutrients over time. With no nutrients, nothing was able to grow and the land became unusable. If that plot of land was abandoned, and left to rest on its own with zero intervention, through the process of Secondary Succession, it would take around 3 years before the land was restored enough to farm again.
From dirt, we’d first see weeds. The weeds would start to pull up nutrients from below the soil. Then after a few years, grasses and wildflowers would start to return. At this point farming would become possible again. Then the amazing part, if that land continued to be left alone, after a few more years shrubs would return, then inevitably after decades trees would return. Real life restored, from rest.
You might be reading this in a coffee shop, in the kitchen, in your office, studio, or dorm. You might also be making connections to certain “plots of land” in your own life.
Analog Sunday is like that Secondary Ecological Succession. When all is depleted, it is rest that restores. When rest is continual, first come the weeds, they’re ugly but dig deep towards new life. Then come the wildflowers, and the ability to grow again. But what if it didn’t stop there? Years would then bring trees that outlast generations.
This Sunday, or whatever day works best for you, ditch the screens and rest. It won’t be easy, at first ugly, but then beautiful. And beyond the beauty, a rhythm that just might outlast generations.
